About YWCA of Metropolitan Detroit

Our Legacy of Advocacy: Since 1893

For over 130 years, the YWCA of Metropolitan Detroit has stood at the intersection of social justice and community service. As one of the oldest associations in Michigan, we don’t just advocate for change—we provide the infrastructure for it.

Our mission is clear: Eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

The Three Pillars of Our Impact

While our mission is global, our work is intensely local. We focus our resources where they can do the most good for the families of Metro Detroit.

  • Justice: Ending the Cycle of Violence We operate the YWCA Interim House, one of the first and largest domestic violence shelters in the region. We provide a safe haven, legal advocacy, and trauma-informed counseling for survivors, ensuring that “Justice” starts with the right to live without fear.
  • Equality: Bridging the Opportunity Gap True equality requires a level playing field. Through our Early Childhood Development Centers, we provide high-quality, accessible childcare that prepares Detroit’s children for academic success while allowing their parents to participate fully in the workforce.
  • Empowerment: Building the Leaders of Tomorrow Empowerment isn’t a gift; it’s a process. Through our youth leadership programs and economic empowerment initiatives, we provide women and girls with the tools, the network, and the confidence to advocate for themselves and their communities.

Why We Are Here

In Metro Detroit, the challenges of systemic racism and gender inequality are deeply intertwined. The YWCA serves as a bridge, connecting urgent social needs with long-term systemic solutions.

Whether we are providing a warm bed for a family in crisis or advocating for policy changes in Lansing, our goal remains the same: A Detroit where every individual has the power to thrive.

Join the Mission

The work of justice is never done alone. We invite you to join us in our mission to transform the Metropolitan Detroit area into a community defined by equity and dignity.

“Justice is not a destination, but a journey we take together.”
