YWCA Interim House is a residential domestic violence shelter serving survivors of intimate partner domestic violence. Since opening in 1979, Interim House has remained one of Michigan’s largest and longest-standing operating domestic violence shelters, providing safe, confidential housing and comprehensive, trauma-informed care for women escaping abusive relationships.
Residential Domestic Violence Program
Interim House operates a 67-bed secure residential facility designed to offer stability, dignity, and healing during a critical transition period. The average length of stay typically ranges from 30 to 60 days. Extended stays may be granted depending on individual needs and safety considerations.

Medical Navigation & Health Advocacy
Interim House is one of the few shelters in the region with a licensed, insured, and registered nurse on site. The Nurse Navigator assists residents with:
- Navigating complex healthcare systems
- Accessing medical appointments
- Coordinating medications and treatment plans
- Managing chronic health concerns
- Connecting to community health resources
- Supporting preventive care and overall wellness
Case Management & System Navigation
Residents receive individualized case management support tailored to their unique needs and goals, including:
- Comprehensive needs assessments
- Structured safety and recovery planning
- Housing, employment, financial, legal, and medical referrals
- Ongoing progress monitoring and emotional support
Each survivor’s plan honors their lived experience and personal path forward.
Victim Advocacy & Legal Support
YWCA Advocates embedded within the Detroit Police Department’s 2nd and 4th precincts provide trauma-informed assistance related to intimate partner domestic violence, including:
- Support with Personal Protection Orders (PPOs)
- Guidance during police reporting and court processes
- Accompaniment and safety planning
- Advocacy available daily and nightly, when needed
- Ongoing advocacy and follow-up support
